macOS setup guide
Before you install Dictor for Mac
When you first open Dictor, the onboarding will ask for a few macOS permissions. They are required for dictation, hotkeys and inserting text to work — please don’t skip that step.
Why these permissions matter
Dictor runs system-wide, so macOS asks your explicit approval before it can listen to your mic, detect your global hotkey, or read and insert text in other apps. Without these, core features simply won’t work. The onboarding walks you through each one in a couple of clicks — granting them is required for the full experience, so don’t skip it. You can revoke any of them later in System Settings.
What you’ll grant during onboarding
Flip each switch on in System Settings — Dictor guides you through it step by step.
Dictor requests permissions per feature. Revoke any time in System Settings.
Read selected text and insert results directly into other apps.
Detect your global hotkeys system-wide.
Capture your voice for dictation.
Show command and dictation status when Dictor is in the background.
How onboarding works
- 1
Install and open Dictor
Open the downloaded .dmg, drag Dictor to Applications, then launch it. The onboarding starts automatically.
- 2
Grant each permission when asked
Dictor opens the right System Settings pane for Accessibility, Input Monitoring and Microphone. Toggle each one on for Dictor.
- 3
Don’t skip — it’s required
All three are needed for dictation, global hotkeys and inserting text. Once they’re on, Dictor is fully ready to use.
